Mount Airy and Germantown (Philadelphia PA) Real Estate and Community Nationally recognized by Oprah’s O magazine and US News and World Report for its neighborhood appeal and as an example of harmonious urban living.
Mount Airy is a wonderful neighborhood in northwest Philadelphia, named for the summer estate of William Allen, Chief Justice of the province of Philadelphia in the 18th century. Well known throughout the city and its suburbs as a green and peaceful, stable and active community, Mount Airy has much to offer. Bordered on one side by Fairmount Park, most parts of Mount Airy, especially West Mount Airy, are walking distance to trails and parks. Neighborhood associations like West Mt Airy Neighbors and East Mt Airy Neighbors, and local cultural and community centers like the Sedgwick Cultural Center, Allens Lane Art Center and Mt Airy Learning Tree, fully serve its residents.
Its real estate is incredibly diverse in style and size. Tree lined streets house Victorian townhouses, Tudor twins and English cottages and colonial singles, many in walking distance to trains, playgrounds and markets. A small commercial district centers around Weaver’s Way Co op, and ‘downtown Mount Airy’ on Germantown Avenue offers locally owned businesses, restaurants and boutiques, even a small movie theater. We also recommend the excellent High Point Cafe for great coffee, pastries and crepes.
Like its neighbors to the north and south, Chestnut Hill and Germantown, Mount Airy has strong roots in the history of Philadelphia, and in fact was originally settled by Quakers who received their land rights directly from William Penn.

GermantownGermantown is another great neighborhood in northwest Philadelphia, bordered approximately by Upsal Street on the north, Wissahickon Avenue and Fairmount Park on the west, Stenton Avenue to the east and Route 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) in the south. It is nestled ideally between Center City and the suburbs, adjoining Mt Airy, East Falls and Roxborough.
Germantown real estate is characterized by diverse, period housing stock. Its proximity to Fairmount Park gives it a green, quiet feel, but it offers lots of amenities for an urban lifestyle like extensive access to public transportation, markets, and is home to many schools. Its charming cobblestone and brick streets display Colonial and Victorian twins and townhouses, and many of its one way lanes boast some of the largest and most affordable singles in the area.
Germantown is rich in history, offering one of the highest proportions of historic sites in the country. Several landmarks, including Cliveden of the National Trust and the Deshler-Morris House, are on the National Register of Historic Places. Colonial Germantown itself is a National Historic District, and contains smaller historic districts, like Tulpehocken Station and Rittenhousetown.
Founded by Quakers in 1681, Germantown is also credited as the birthplace of the abolitionist movement. Many houses used as stations in the Underground Railroad still stand today. It has an incredibly active historical society, an involved community, antique stores, wildlife and gardens, music schools, and an important role in Philadelphia as ‘the nation’s earliest urban village.’
